About
Shreya Jhalani is a Southern California–based painter whose work occupies the space between beauty and unease, sensuality and spirituality, structure and instinct. Moving between abstraction and figuration, she uses color, gesture and organic forms to create paintings that feel intimate, psychologically charged and occasionally otherworldly.
Jhalani has long been drawn to seemingly opposing ways of seeing. With an academic background in economics and mathematics and a parallel life in acting and the visual arts, she is interested in both structure and intuition—what can be understood and what can only be felt. Cinema, mythology and mysticism form part of the visual and emotional vocabulary of her work.
Her paintings resist the familiar promise of transformation as neat resolution. Instead, she returns to what remains complicated: beauty that survives rupture, desire and longing that resist explanation, and the strange proximity of tenderness and darkness.
For Jhalani, painting is not an attempt to reconcile these contradictions, but to give them form.
